CORNUCOPIA: "Frontier castle" DEC 1997 N°14 "...Over the years I have seen almost all Cappadocia has to offer. But watching the moon rise over the rock cones and dunes of the valley below, through the columns on the edge of Les Chèvres on a cool August evening, warmed by the log fire blazing away under a sculpted stone mantelpiece, was one of the most sheerly magical experiences of my life. I spent my last morning there alone, after my companions had left, savouring the elegance of the design and the harmony between the stonework and the surounding landscape. Can anywhere as beautiful as these houses come into being in this day and age? I would not have believed it if I had not seen it. When Avizou has completed his programme of restoration, he will have created a small wonder of the modern world and set standards for other Cappadocian restorers to live up to... David Barchard SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER MAGAZINE : "Dusty dunescapes" March 12,2000 "...That night we had a chance to taste quaffable local bootlings at our base camp, Les Maisons de Cappadoce". This luxury resort nestles its half-dozen rental houses on the crumbling flanks of Uçhisar, another cone-shaped citadel. Brainchild of French architect Jacques Avizou, it's a model of how local housing should be restored. Avizou has worked for more than ten years with local artisans and masons to reinforce Uçhisar's ancient subterranean dwellings and rebuild the houses grafted onto them in the 18th and19th centuries. Each reborn unit has sculpted portals, stone fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and a panoramic terrace? Some retain their grape-crushing vats hewn from the floor, a common feature in Cappadocian houses..." David Downie HOUSE & GARDEN: "The halls of the moutain king" March 1998 "Abandoning his French architectural practice, Jacques Avizou has started a new life renovating and modernizing cave dwellings in Cappadocia. ....Jacques's work has attracted considerable international attention. When he bought them, the cave houses were unoccupied and unhabitable; under his direction, they have been transformed. All have been decorated by Jacques and Anne in the same style as their own home and now boast modern kitchens and bathrooms- the absence of which had forced the previous occupants to move out. In other ways, the houses vary enourmously, from small "fairy chimneys" for two, to large villas like Jacques's own. All share the heavenly backdrop of the Cappadocian landscape. Jody de Falbe HOUSE BEAUTIFUL : "Shelter in the rock" March 1997 "...The 200-year-old three-story house was a sunny dream of a place with a large, airy living room, modern kitchen, small courtyard, and rooftop terrace. Abandonned many years ago, the house has been rescued by Avizou. We were his first tenants. From our terrace we could see Cappadocia stretching ahead of us for miles- a surreal landscape of white, terra-cotta pink, and mustard-yellow tuff, a soft volcanic rock. Over the millennia the tuff had been sculpted by water and wind into towering obelisks and cones, some topped with teetering pillows of dense basalt. Similar weathering had rendered the nearby hills and the ridges and cliffs of the horizon into a series of soft budges and curving ribs, a voluptuous terrain that made the earth appear to be lying nude. Everywhere I looked I was reminded of the Barcelona architect Gaudi: tuff obelisks looked like the spires of his cathedral, Sagrada Familia; sculpted ridges resembled the undulating facade of his apartment house,Casa Mila. Dale Mackenzie Brown GOURMET: ROOMS AT THE TOP: MOST UNUSUAL May 2000 Become a pampered caveman in one of the "Les Maisons de Cappadoce" in the old quarter of Uçhisar, an ideal base from which to explore the region. The seven exquisitely restored ancient "cave" dwellings, which vary on size, are comfortable and handsomely decorated with kilims and locally made furniture. All have fireplaces-it can be chilly at night- and small gardens for sunbathing. |
